Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in cannabis (and many other plants) that contribute to the plant’s scent, flavor, and potential therapeutic effects. In cannabis, they play a key role in the “entourage effect,” where they may influence or enhance the effects of cannabinoids like THC and CBD.
🌿 What Are Terpenes?
Terpenes are natural hydrocarbons produced by the trichomes (tiny glands) on cannabis flowers.
Over 150 different terpenes have been identified in cannabis, each with unique effects and aromas (e.g., citrus, pine, floral).
🧠 Role in Mental Health & Therapeutic Potential
Many terpenes have pharmacological properties that may contribute to anxiety relief, mood regulation, and sedation. Here are some of the most studied:
🌈 The Entourage Effect
Terpenes interact synergistically with cannabinoids (like THC and CBD) to modulate effects.
For example, limonene may help reduce anxiety caused by high-THC strains, while myrcene may enhance sedation.
🧪 Research Status
While preclinical studies (mostly in animals) show promise, more human trials are needed.
Some terpenes are already used in aromatherapy and herbal medicine.
⚠️ Considerations
Effects vary between individuals.
The concentration and combination of terpenes matters—two strains with the same THC level can feel very different.
Always consult a healthcare provider before using cannabis for mental health.
